Long time, no post, but today I'm back with something exciting - the new Erin Condren Life Planner for 2017 just arrived! Yay! I know you probably have seen a billion posts and videos about the new planners, but this is my review and personal opinion - hope it helps you in any way! You can see my review for the previous version here.
EC released some new planners this year, with two new color schemes, one colorful and a neutral. I really appreciate that they designed a neutral planner, as I use a lot of stickers to plan and having a neutral base would match anything, so on launch day I ordered that one, in the vertical layout. I've tried the horizontal before but vertical is my favorite!
I selected the rose gold coil that I've been eyeing since last year and I was a little nervous to see how it would look like, after reading and watching some horror stories about the coating flaking off. The coil arrived in good condition overall but where it was bent to close the last ring, it has some chipping. As a jewelry maker, I know that if you bend a coated metal the top layer will most likely flake, so I was ok with that. Hopefully it doesn't flake anywhere else! To go with it, I got this beautiful floral cover, customized with my name. I really love how the colors complement each other so well.
So let's talk about the interior!
Above you can see the vertical weekly layout, which is exactly the same for all the months. The only thing that changes each month, are the colorful flags, matching the new colorful scheme. I really like that little color pop, it can serve as a color guide when decorating. I'm not a huge fan of the black top headers, I think they could have started with a dark grey instead. A black header will most likely show under a lighter sticker - maybe some white out will come in handy to hide it, I know it will bother me! The thankful thought box also changed, for the better, in my opinion - it's much lighter and pleasant to look at.
They kept the lined note page at the end of each month and the quote in the begining, with a new watercolor design that matches the monthly colors in the colorful version, which I really like (just the design, not the actual printing quality, but let's talk about it in a second)! The monthly tabs remain laminated but they're all black and simple.
Now, here's the section that REALLY disappointed me - the monthly section. The layout is pretty and clean, I love the fonts and simplicity but the printing quality is just terrible. All the lines are pixelated and blurry and that is just not acceptable for a company the size of EC! What were they thinking to allow it to go into production like this? For a planner at this price point, it's just simply disappointing.
Here you can see a closeup on some of the year overview and goals, where it's all so pixelated, just like the monthly overview. They actually have a disclaimer saying they're not "responsible for errors or changes". I really hope they can fix this issue and come up with better printing quality for these pages in the future, or EC and I will have to breakup! :(
Some other design changes include the double sided pocket divider, which have a cute new look, with a scalloped pocket and the new mid-century circle pattern. Another new feature is the dry erase boards on the back of each cover, where you can write with the special markers available on the EC website. I didn't get any of those (or any other new product they released), I just don't see me using them. They have also updated the built in sticker sheets, with new color schemes and flag shapes, which I like and have previously used a lot in the monthly view.
Finally, the "keep it together pouch" is no longer attached to the back of the planner, which is awesome, as it doesn't bulk up the book. As usual, it comes with some freebies and extras, like this adorable mini sampler sticker book, with gold foiling. It also comes with a long coil clip that you can stick to the pouch (or anything else) and add it to the planner, along with some compliment cards and two 20% off coupons. I really like this pouch and the new zipper closure, way easier to work with than the older version - I might use this pouch to keep stickers!
Overall, I'm pleased with how the planner looks and I'll use it as my main daily planning tool but I'm just disappointed. I think it's unacceptable to pay such a high price point for a product that lacks quality, even if it's just a few pages.
If you're an EC fan like me I'd still recommend getting it but if you're just starting out planning or you don't have a big budget I'd say there are better options, like the Happy Planner!
